Grasmere
is set in a valley that is surrounded by hills with the
Lake of Grasmere a short walk away. The village is positioned
centrally in geographical terms within the lakes. The village
is a gem for William
Wordsworth fans and also for walkers where excellent
walks can be enjoyed from a pleasant walk to the more strenuous
walks with routes to the top of Helvellyn from Thirlmere
being a short drive away to begin the walk.
Around the square in Grasmere, with its green, you will
find a number of attractive stone-built houses. On the main
road which twists through the village, are old cottages,
Victoria villas, hotels, guesthouses, galleries and shops.
With William Wordsworth being the main attraction to this
village you can visit Dove
Cottage where he lived from 1799 to 1808 and the house
can be viewed in its original condition. It was while William
lived here that he wrote much of his finest works. Next
door [a former barn] the museum displays manuscripts, paintings
and various other items which are associated with the poet.
At the church of St. Oswald's you will find Wordsworth and
his family are buried in the churchyard. The church itself
is dated from the 13th Century in parts. Outside the church
is pebble dashed but inside it comes into its own with striking
features such as the roof which dates back to 1562. A rush-
bearing service takes place during August, on the Saturday
nearest to the 5th of August.
Close to the church is the schoolroom where William Wordsworth
once taught. The building is now the home of Sarah Nelson's
Celebrated Grasmere Gingerbread shop since 1854.
One of the biggest events which takes place in the Lake
District is the Grasmere Sports and is held on the third
Thursday after the first Monday in August. Fell running/racing,
hound trailing, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling can
be seen, along with other activities and stalls.
On Grasmere Lake you can hire rowing boats and visit the
small island in the middle of the lake.
