Glenridding can be found at the foot of Kirkstone Pass at the southern end of Ullswater Lake. Glenridding is the main centre for the Ullswater area.

Glenridding was once the centre of the lead mining industry, since this as gone, the area is mainly for the tourists who come to view one of the most beautiful areas in the Lakes. The area is popular with walkers with many walks to suit all levels from the easy to the more demanding. One reason a lot of walkers come here is to do the classic Helvellyn walk along Striding Edge. A walk not for the fainted hearted with Helvellyn reaching a height of 3,116ft [950m].

You could combine a walk and a cruise along Ullswater Lake on one of the steamers that can be seen on the lake. The Ullswater Steamers the "Lady of the Lake" and "Raven" date from 1877 and 1889. You can board these steamers either at Glenridding, Howtown or at the northern end of Ullswater at Pooley Bridge. You will enjoy some fine scenery along the 7.5 mile [12km] lake.

One area that is recommended is Aira Force especially after heavy rain where you will witness a spectacular waterfall of 60ft [18m] between rocks. It can be found on the northern side of the lake on Gowbarrow Fell. You will find bridges at the top and bottom to view from.

Close to Glenridding is Patterdale on the southern tip of Ullswater Lake. Patterdale is another popular area for walkers for Helvellyn and the fells and peaks around. The village is only small and the church of St. Patrick's was built in 1853, which has notable tapestries by Ann Macbeth who lived in the village from 1921 until her death in 1943.

It is also said that the patron saint of Ireland St. Patrick preached here and baptised converts. His Holy Well is at the roadside and can be found 1 mile [1.5km] north of the village.
