Cockermouth
is an ancient market town and can be found in the northern
parts of Cumbria on the edge of the National Park where
the River Cocker and the River Derwent meet.
The town received its charter in 1221 it will be found to
be a town with character and charm with its maze of old
streets, alleyways and yards.
Cockermouth is a town associated with plenty of history
from the Romans to Fletcher Christian [On Bounty] the mutineer
who was born here. Mary Queen of Scots and Robert the Bruce
have passed through the town.
One person who has made the town popular his William Wordsworth who was
born here in 1770. The house, being Georgian, can be found
in the tree-lined Main Street. The house is named Wordsworth
House and belongs to the National
Trust. Inside the house you will discover various rooms
and treasures which belonged to the Wordsworths. The house
was owned by Sir James Lowther of Lowther Castle and William's
father. John worked for Sir James and lived here rent free.
Within Cockermouth there is Jennings
Brewery which dates from 1828 and here you can discover
the history of brewing and taste some of its finest beers
after the guided tour. The smallest brewery in the area
can be found at the Bitter End Pub.
There are a number of museums ranging from the Printing
Museum, Toy and Model Museum, Percy House Gallery, art gallery
at Castlegate House and Skylark Studio.
There is a castle, but this in ruins and is not open to
the public. The church of All Saints has a stained glass
east window, which is a memorial to Wordsworth and his father's
tomb can be found in the churchyard.
In the River Derwent there is trout fishing in which, Bing
Crosby has tried his hand and in the bar at the Trout Hotel
in Main Street a photograph of him is displayed.
In the shopping centre
you will find a host of unusual specialist shops, along
with the traditional shops, cafes, restaurants and bars.
