Carlisle can be found in the northern parts of Cumbria, close to the border with Scotland. Carlisle is a city and has a long history dating back to the Romans, Robert the Bruce, Roundheads and the Railways to match it's city status.

To learn more about the history of Carlisle, a visit to the award winning Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery is a must. The museum can be found in Castle Street, where you will find interactive and natural history displays combining fun with education to suit all ages.

Carlisle Castle dates back to the 1092 and was built by William II. It can be found opposite the Tullie House Museum. The castle is steeped in history from Mary Queen of Scots, who was imprisoned here in 1568, Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, who captured the castle and also the Border Regiment Museum can be found here.

Carlisle Cathedral dates back to 1122 and became a Cathedral in 1132 under Henry I. Inside the cathedral you will notice a high ceiling with blue panels and golden stars. Opposite the main entrance of the cathedral is the Fratry. This is a monastic common room from the 13th Century. Inside the cathedral is a library and a restaurant.
The city is popular with visitors who come to see the famous Hadrian's Wall and a visit to the Birdoswald [Hadrian's Wall] is a must. Birdoswald is where you will find the remains of a Roman Fort and settlement on the western end of Hadrian's Wall dating back to 125AD. The Exhibition Centre here helps to build a picture of that time.

Besides Hadrian's Wall, you will also find City Walls, built around 1000yrs later. The best example can be found behind St. Cuthbert's and the Carlisle Cathedral and is known as the West Walls.

Carlisle began to prosper as a textile centre at the end of the18th Century. With the prosperity from that time, fine roads were built along with Georgian and Victorian houses, which can be found in Abbey Street and English Street.
