Beneath the rugged fells of Troutbeck Valley, you will discover The Mortal Man. Dignified in its long established position as the valley's inn since 1689, it resides over a wondrous panorama that has captivated the great minds of poets, authors and painters throughout the centuries.

Originally a small ale house built by Isaac Cookson, it is probably best known because of its unusual name, derived from the sign which hangs by the road above and reads:

Each of the inn's twelve bedrooms offer superb comfort and have their own glorious views of the Troutbeck Valley including the inn's luxury four poster bedroom. All rooms are equipped with radio, television, direct dial telephone, trouser press and en suite facilities including bath, shower and hairdryer.

The inn's long-standing reputation for providing delicious dishes is well deserved.

It offers menus that are packed with imaginative dishes. Rich in variety and taste, all dishes are freshly prepared using the finest local produce. After a stimulating day exploring the stunning landscape, the residents lounge and two adjoining bars offer the perfect place to relax, complete with glorious log fires. The bars offer an intimate and cosy atmosphere where you may enjoy a light brunch or, in the evening, sample the real traditional ales and many malt whiskies on offer as you unwind and prepare for your next day.
