The Horse & Farrier has enjoyed an idyllic location in the centre of the picturesque village of Threlkeld, just 4 miles east of Keswick in Cumbria, for over 300 years. Built in 1688 and situated beneath Blencathra, with stunning views looking over towards the Helvellyn Range, this traditional Lakeland Inn offers a warm Cumbrian welcome to all its customers.

Mellow Lakeland stone, traditional architecture and such a peaceful setting make the Horse & Farrier a perfect place to enjoy a quiet pint, delicious food or a short break "away from it all".

With superb Lakeland walks on your doorstep including Blencathra and Skiddaw and the Cumbria Way, we're ideally situated for walkers.

Our Restaurant is well known locally for the quality and imagination of its food and our Bar serves some of the best Jennings real ales in the Lake District.

About Us

Within its thick walls the Horse & Farrier Inn has all that is expected of a village pub and lots more besides. Built in 1688, this traditional Lakeland Inn with slate flagged floors, beamed ceilings and open fires, retains all the character you would expect from a building with such a long history.

Situated at the foot of Blencathra in the beautiful village of Threlkeld , only 4 miles from Keswick. The Horse and Farrier has views across towards Skiddaw in the west and Helvellyn to the south, it really is a beautiful location to spend a few hours or several days.

For the last six years, under the ownership of Ian Court, the Horse & Farrier has been dedicated to serving food and drink of excellent quality, amidst informal, attractive surroundings, where our customers can feel totally relaxed. We have received numerous awards and guide book recommendations which reflects the commitment of the Horse & Farrier Team to customer satisfaction.

Our comfortable Bed & Breakfast (B&B) guest rooms with amazing views and excellent facilities, make this the perfect place for a weekend "away from it all", or even a longer holiday. We now have extra guest accommodation at the Horse & Farrier Guest House.

The Horse & Farrier has received numerous accolades, being recommended by many leading guide books including the AA's Pub & Restaurant Guides. Our restaurant is renowned locally for the quality of its cuisine and our service is second to none. The Horse & Farrier Head Chef, Garth Wilson was voted "Most Inspiring Cumbria Chef of the Year for 2005" by the Cumbrian Tourist Board.


We have ample car parking at both the front and side of the Inn, together with a small beer garden with magnificent views. There is also excellent wheelchair access and disabled toilet facilities. Well behaved dogs are always welcome at the Horse & Farrier.

Complementing the bar and restaurant of the Horse & Farrier are 9 well appointed bed & breakfast (B&B) guest rooms , all with excellent views, but each with a slightly different perspective on the local countryside from its window.

We're " dog-friendly " too - well behaved dogs are always welcome but there is a small charge to cover extra cleaning per stay.

The Horse & Farrier Inn has an excellent reputation in the Keswick area for good food, from our hearty Lakeland breakfast to our home cooked meals which are served either in our intimate Restaurant or in the Bar.

Our Menus are interesting and varied. Dishes make full use of seasonal and local produce and are freshly prepared in our gleaming kitchen. An ever growing number of regular diners together with numerous guide book recommendations are testament to the kitchen team's abilities.

The AA regularly awards the AA rosette for the quality of our food and service.

Vegetarians are also well catered for with a large selection of vegetarian options available on the Menu.

We have a great range of quality wines and champagnes to suit every budget and not forgetting our excellent range of real ales from Jennings and other well known breweries.

The Horse & Farrier Bar

We pride ourselves on serving some of the best real ales in the area, serving a selection of well kept Jennings' beers, a regular guest beer, as well as the usual range of keg beers and lagers. We have "Cask Marque" accreditation for the quality of our real ales, which reflects the emphasis we place on storing and serving our real ale correctly.

Wine lovers are well catered for too as we have an extensive wine list of quality wines from all over the World.

Jennings is the local Cumbrian Brewery based in Cockermouth, just 17 miles up the road. We serve a wide range of Jennings Ales which may include (depending on the season):-
