Lake District Accommodation

Duke of Edinburgh Hotel & Bar

Abbey Road
Barrow-in-Furness
Cumbria
LA14 5QR

Tel: 01229 821039

Then ...

Our grand old building was built in 1871 during Barrow's “golden age”. Whilst Barrow became the world's largest steel producing town, the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel was the most prestigious and illustrious hotel in South Cumbria attracting visitors from across the globe.
That was then… time passed…

The “proud” Duke became the “tired” Duke and slowly fell into disrepair.

In October 2006, the pile of bricks, collectively known as the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel, was bought and the refurbishment began.

Now ...

In September 2007, after twelve months of work, the doors to the hotel re-opened. The hotel accommodation is unique to Barrow in Furness offering stylishly appointed, ensuite rooms with flat screen televisions and over sized beds. Our all new Regent's Function Suite is contemporary, chic and comfortable - the perfect place for any social or work event.

We look forward to welcoming guests old and new to the re-established
Duke of Edinburgh Hotel & Bar.

Accommodation ...

Retreat to your private sanctuary in the heart of Barrow in Furness, neatly situated within five minutes walk from Barrow train station and yards away from the town centre. Our rooms are visually impressive with designer fittings, carefully soundproofed with every modern day practicality. Stay in or go out – Barrow's bars and restaurants are within easy walking distance.

Our rooms have been carefully crafted to offer the best in contemporary styling yet also include every modern day practicality. Our rooms offer over-sized beds, flat screen digital televisions, designer en-suite bathrooms and internet connection. This is a modern hotel presented in a classic, Victorian setting.

There are currently 18 bedrooms to choose from – including twin and double rooms. All the rooms are sizeable, though some offer extra space and luxury, including stand-alone cast iron baths.

We have 3 classes of accommodation - Standard, Superior and Executive.

We charge per room (not per person) and Barrow in Furness' finest a'la Carte breakfast is included in the price (available from 7am until a civilised 10.30am).

Please note we operate a strict no smoking policy in all rooms

Owing to the architectural nature of this Victorian building, we regret that there is no lift access to rooms but our staff are trained and primed to help you with your luggage.

Check out time is 11am and we accept check ins from 3pm (unless pre-arranged).

The Regent's Suite ...

Our newly refurbished function suite is situated on the first floor and is a superb place to hold a party, wedding, christening, business event or social event. The suite includes a stylish bar with a wide selection of draft and bottled beers, wines and spirits; a separate dining; and a large ballroom dance floor.

The ambience is stylish and warm. This is not an overly fussy, pretentious venue but designed to be visually impressive whilst maintaining a comfortable, welcoming style for all ages.

We can seat up to 80 for dining with up to 250 being able to fit into the venue for social events. This is the perfect venue for an intimate wedding, stylish party or all- day business event.

Please contact us on 01229 821039 for more information on charges. All events are designed on a bespoke basis; we will ensure an event is tailored to your exact requirements.

Food ...

We are really proud of our food menu, which evolves seasonally with specials that changes every day.

Our chefs give full flight to their imagination to come up with surprising but tasty combinations – not fancy, not fussy, just tasty.

We source as many ingredients as we can locally, so ask us and we'll be able to tell you about the ale that we've used in that day's pie, or which farm the Gloucester Old Spot grew up on.

We aren't a fast food place - everything is cooked on site, from scratch, but tell us if you're in a hurry and we'll do our best.

Our famous cheeseboards are available all day through to the evening. Simply select three or six of your favourite cheeses/pates and we'll provide you with pickles, chunks of bread/butter.

The Consort Bar ...

Famous for it's hospitality and eclectic array of local and international beers, the Duke's Consort bar offers a stylish and comfortable setting in which to enjoy the best possible choice of drinks and food.

The bar was first established in 1871 and by 2006 was in need of a little care and attention. In December 2006 the bar re-opened after a total re-design uncovering long hidden fireplaces and ceiling covings. The new Consort Bar offers eight cask ales, dozens of unusual bottled beers, an extensive wine/spirit list and superb food created from scratch by own award winning chefs.

The bar is designed to offer bright, comfortable day time eating/drinking before the lights dim and the place becomes more intimate in the late afternoon/evening.

It's uncluttered and simple in concept, we don't need door staff and we don't stock alcopops.

This is a bar designed for everyday food and drink connoisseurs.

We frequently have live music in the evenings; our Jazz and Blues nights offer the best in local music.

Local artists are welcome to display their work on our walls, free of charge. We do not charge commission for sales. The work is diverse and not to everyone's universal taste – but surely that's the point of art!

So come along and experience a different kind of night out in Barrow.
