Levens
Hall and Topiary Gardens
is the home of the Bagot family and is situated in the
South Lakeland District close to Kendal.
The house is a Elizabethan Mansion Home and was built
around the 14th Century Pele Tower which was square
and had thick walls and the narrowest windows, with
the tower allowing the wealthy landowners to protect
their families, livestock and servants in times of danger.
Within the house you will find a fine collection of
Jacobean furniture, superb panelling, fine paintings,
the earliest English patchwork and many other fine objects.
The world famous gardens are considered to be in the
top ten United Kingdom Gardens, and winners of various
awards, were laid out from 1694. You will be dazzled
by the Topiary [yew trees which are clipped into a variety
of shapes], beech hedges and the colourful seasonal
bedding creating a dramatic effect and memory that will
last.
Levens Hall was the setting for a BBC production of
"Wives and Daughters" a costume drama series.
Also
at Levens Hall is the working Steam Collection and Bertha
the Showman's Engine can be found in steam on Sunday's
and Bank Holiday Monday's.
Homemade lunches and teas are available, which have
been prepared in the house kitchens and a visit to The
Potting Shed Shop were you can purchase and browse the
various gifts on display. On sale is the Levens "Morocco
Ale" which is brewed to a secret recipe.
