Lakeside
& Haverthwaite Railway is situated close to
Newby Bridge which is at the southern end of Lake Windermere
on the A590. You will find steam locomotives working
hard on the steeply graded railway on part of the originally
Furness Railway branch line which carried passengers
and freight from the town of Ulverston
to Lakeside.
You will find on this section of line 6.0km [3.5miles]
in length, steam locomotives that are restored and preserved
to their former glory. The railway line runs from Haverthwaite,
through Newby Bridge to the terminus at Lakeside in
which you will pass through beautiful countryside alongside
the River Leven in the Leven Valley as you sit in comfortable
coaching stock that ensures that passengers have a pleasant
and leisurely journey.
On
reaching Lakeside you can make an enjoyable day out
by taking a cruise on Lake Windermere Cruises with a
visit to Bowness
[Windermere], Ambleside
or visit to the Aquarium
depending on the amount of time you have before you
head back on your return journey to Haverthwaite for
something to eat or drink at The Station Restaurant
& Tea Room.
The journey can also be started at Ambleside or Bowness
on Windermere by taking a trip on Lakes
Windermere Cruises.
At Haverthwaite Railway Station you will also find an
Engine Shed where you can view various engines, picnic
area, souvenir shop, car park and coach parking is available.
