Youth Hostels Association [YHA] is an organisation which provides the basic accommodation to the budget traveller, but they are gradually upgrading some of their hostels. It also offers an excellent way to explore the delights of the Lake District for the backpacker.

You must be a member of the Youth Hostels Association [YHA] to use their accommodation; you could even join the YHA on arrival. You pay a one-off fee for the year, which, at this time is £14.00 for adults, £7.00 for the under-18s, with discounts for families. You can then stay at any youth hostel during the next 12 months. Once you are a member, you pay for the cost accommodation which will range depending on the facilities and area you are in. It is recommended that you contact them prior to arrival, to check availability and costs.
